The Literary Roller Coaster
(This was a project that included both physics and humanities.)
Provide a picture or the actual final product from this project. (Left)
My group members were Tanner Ragan and Kyle Hawthorne. This group was good, and we got all of our work done, but it could be pretty stressful. Tanner and I don't work well together due to past experiences, and it was pretty hard to work hard together in this project. even though we got everything done, I think it might have been better if I were in a different group.
In this project, my group and I made a functioning mini roller coaster with a ramp, loop, camelbacks, a wide turn, and a funnel. We also made multiple mini model elements that related to the book To Kill A Mockingbird to put along the track in our roller coaster. I made a brochure that explained all of the elements and literary devices portrayed through the coaster, long with a accurately scaled blueprint. We also came up with a name and theme for our roller coaster that related to the book and character we chose. Through this project, I learned a lot about literary devices that I didn't know before. We have talked about them in the past, but this project really helped me grasp them more. I also learned more about potential, kinetic, and mechanical energy.
I am pretty proud of our final product, and I am happy with the way our elements came out. I think our group did a good job of communicating and compromising, even when it got stressful or when we were mad at each other.
The main struggles we had were when we were building our roller coaster and trying to make the track work. We went through a lot of trial and error while we tried to make our track function. Once we got our coaster to work, it was fairly easy to make the elements, since they were smaller and more planned out. Aside from building struggles, our group struggled to maintain a good attitude and work environment, due to us being annoyed with each other, which led to less communication, which became a problem. However, we did try our best to tolerate each other for the sake of the project, which taught me a lot about teamwork and group work. Projects like this make me learn more about the real world and group work. In the future, I might work with people that I don't work well with or don't like, but projects like this better prepare me for those days.
I think that I did well in this project by staying on task and trying my best to find things to work on and fix my coaster, and I tried to work well with my group the best I could. In the future, I need to work on being more patient with my group members and communicate with them more.
If I could change this project, I would want groups to have the ability to choose their groups (with guidance and approval of the teachers) because it would create a better work environment if people who worked well together worked together. Otherwise, this project was pretty good, and I think it turned out well.
