Integrated Circuits - Political Butterfly

During this project, I got some help and critique from classmates, but my brother was the most helpful. I felt like I didn't get as much in-class instruction as I needed/wanted, so my mainly I went to my family for help. In the beginning stages of this project, our class critiques were also very helpful because they gave me ideas for my designs.
In this project, we made mechanical butterflies that lit up and flapped their wings. We learned how to make series and parallel circuits and how to build a working mechanical system. We also studied Ohm's Law and had a test on electrical fields/circuits. I enjoyed learning about circuits because it is the first time that I have really understood how they work. I also learned how to use a soldering iron.
I enjoyed that we had a lot of creative control in this project. I was able to build any kind of butterfly, big or small, and design it any way I want. I am glad we didn't have too many restrictions, and we could build any butterfly we wanted, as long as it lit up and moved.
My biggest struggle in this project was that I felt like I wasn't getting enough direction or instruction. I was very frustrated and didn't understand how to make my butterfly work, and I felt like no one was helping me. I took my butterfly home and showed my brother, and with his help I was able to finish and understand the mechanics.
I worked hard and did a lot of work during class, but I should have focused more at the beginning. In the beginning of the project, I didn't do much work in class because I had so much time until exhibition. That meant that at the end, I had tons of work to finish and not much time. Next time, I want to work hard and focus from the beginning of the project so that I don't get as stressed towards the end.
I think this project would have gone more smoothly if we had a list of materials that everyone would need at the beginning (leds, resistors, motors, batteries, etc.) because then people wouldn't be stealing materials or running out. We needed more instruction, too. I was very frustrated because I didn't understand how to build the butterfly or how it worked, and it would have been better if we had more lessons on how to make them work. Overall, this was an interesting project and I learned many new things, but it would have been better if we had more structure and instruction.
