9th Grade Career Day
Pre-Career Day Reflection:
1. What category di d you get on your career survey? Is it accurate? Why/Why not?
- The survey suggested a career in law, public safety, and security for me. I think this is semi-accurate because I am interested in law enforcement and security, but I am definitely not sure. I know I wouldn't want to be a lawyer because I want to do things active. If I have a job, I want to be out in the field working with my hands and doing things and not just typing and doing paperwork.
2. What are your expectations for career day? What do you hope to get out of it? What are you afraid of?
- I don't know what to expect from career day because I don't know where to go or who to shadow. I hope to find something I am interested in or narrow down what I don't want to pursue. Even if I find that I don't enjoy the job I shadow, I will learn more about what I do want to do. I am not afraid of anything regarding career day, except I don't know who to shadow.

Post Career Day Reflection:
For my career day, I spent a few hours with a security guard on a college campus. I had originally hoped to shadow someone at the Sheriff's Station, but they were overwhelmed due to the fires. The day of, we went in their patrol car and made a few rounds through the campus, checking to make sure all was well. In the car, I asked questions and interviewed the officers. I met the woman in charge of the security cameras and secretarial duties and I learned about what her job is like, as well as what new or interning security guards do. I thought it was fun and interesting, but I know I wouldn't want to pursue that as a career. There didn't seem to be much to do and it was very quiet, and I think I'd prefer a career with more action. Overall, this was a good learning experience and I think I learned more about myself and what I might want to or not want to do. Below are a few of the questions I asked the officer that I shadowed:
Why did you choose to go into this field? What inspired you?
- Someone approached him because the college security wanted younger officers. He didn't know what he wanted to go into as a career so he said yes. Eight years later, he is still there.
Did your college education apply to your job?
- He majored in philosophy and wasn't able to find a job in that field. The security guards must go through a training session in order to become official, so his major didn't really matter or apply to the job.
What is the work atmosphere like?
- The officers that work together are all friendly and it is a nice work environment. They have fun around the office by playing pranks and jokes on each other.
Do you hope to advance in this career? Where do you see yourself going?
- He said he sees himself staying where he is because he enjoys his job.
