Act II, Scene I begins with the bride getting ready for her wedding day and preparing for guests to arrive. The entire set is white, and we decided that a soft piano best reminded us of white, and the idea of purity and innocence that goes along with it. The scene opens with a soft piano solo, which we chose because it is the most common instrument played at a wedding. As the scene progresses, the music gets more rich and different styles of piano are overlaid to create a deep yet sweet sound.
When Leonardo comes into the scene, there is a lot of tension between characters. During the line where Leonardo says “To be silent and consumed by fire is the worst punishment on earth…”, the music will completely cut off. We hope that this will be intriguing, because as the characters begin to yell at each other and discuss the meaning of the line, there will be no music or other sounds to distract the audience. The silence on the stage will only increase the awkwardness of the situation and intensity between the characters. However, when Leonardo leaves, the music will slowly fade back into a soft piano that will continue until the end of the scene.
