Native Plant Landscape Design
One of the first concepts covered in biology this year was plants and plant identification. We spent several weeks hiking, researching, and identifying plants in the San Marcos area in order to learn the differences between native, non-native, and invasive plants. We learned how to identify certain species of plants as well as which biomes the plants thrive in. We discovered the many ecosystems in our area and which plants belong there.
I was injured during most of this project and was unable to hike and participate in the plant ID process. I completed a separate project that involved researching native plants, identifying which plants were best for San Marcos, and creating a landscape design of a native garden.
My landscape design was required to be to-scale, include a walkway, and be full of native plants that complimented each other. I chose to create a few designs as well as a large design with a partner. Our final products were pages of research notes, pictures and descriptions of all the native plants used in the designs, and blueprints of gardens. We also completed extensive research on native wildlife, specifically the pollinators of San Marcos.
