Interviews
During the course of this project, we interviewed second graders a few times. We used their knowledge of food to alter our projects to teach them as much as we could through our art. They gave us insight and critique on our art pieces that were eventually displayed in he garden of their school. My group mostly focused on whether or not the children knew what food allergies are, why they occur, and what makes them go away. Below are some notes I took during these interviews.
Interview #1 - Alex and Adrian
Alex:
- Likes fruits and vegetables
- Thinks he has a pineapple allergy (makes his tongue itch)
- Pineapple doesn't hurt him when he touches it, but hurts to eat
- Itching goes away in a few hours
- Makes him feel different because he can't eat it
- Family has no allergies
- Think that there are a lot of different allergic reactions
- Thinks common allergies are cake, chocolate, cheese, carrot cake, and pie
- Wonders what seeds in fruits do
- Wants to know if you can get more allergies
- Thinks 7,000 people in the world have allergies
- Wonders why some people have allergies and others do not
- Thinks he will outgrow his allergy
Adrian:
- Likes fruits and vegetables
- Has no allergies
- Thinks 200 people in the world have allergies
- Wants to know why some people have allergies and others do not
Interview #2 - Mandy, Adrian, and Jason
- Like the design of the tiles
- Prefers "1 in 13" rather than "7%"
- Wants the color to be green, blue, or yellow
- Don't know much about food allergies
- Have friends with peanut allergies
Interview #3 - Dylan and Sully
- Thinks the tile should be blue, green, or yellow
- Prefers "1 in 13" to "7%"
- Knows about the nutrition in some foods (such as bananas)
- Don't have allergies, but think life would be hard with them
- Don't have a lot of knowledge on food allergies
