Exhibition 2015: Century Street
An American Timeline Through Art
For our Exhibition project this year, we learned about American history throughout the past 100 years and created art pieces that represented a certain decade. In groups of 3, we chose a specific decade to focus on and learned about the political, social, and artistic movements of the time period. We then found important or inspirational pieces of art from that time and recreated them. My group chose to research the 1940s, specifically the role of women in America during WWII. We chose to recreate the iconic "We Can Do It!" poster because it was a very important art piece during the time and was used to encourage women to take on jobs that were traditionally held by men. The poster became a famous image that represented the power and value of women and showed everyone that they were capable of taking on tasks that they were previously unable to accomplish due to discrimination and societal standards. Women were needed to work during the 1940s in order for America to thrive, and this poster conveys the positive attitude and hopefulness with which they faced the challenges ahead of them.
Below are a few pictures of the process of creating our painting, as well as the finished product on Exhibition night.
